Repubblica – L’anno che verrà
For the project L'anno che verrà Repubblica asked nine illustrators to design a different cover for each local edition of the newspaper. For the city of Naples I took inspiration from Lu Cardillo, a bird that in the neapolitan folklore is a messenger of love. The illustration also refers to the street art piece The Cardillo of Scampia by Simon Jung e Paul & Hanno Schweizer. The piece is an anamorphic artwork painted on one of the infamous buldings of Scampia, Le Vele.
I really liked how it exploits the structural features of buidings that are considered architectonical failure to reverse the narration of the tough neighborhood and create an imagery of hope, rebirth and escape from a difficult situation. I though it was a good idea to bring the Cardillo over the city to talk about Naples and its near future.
